What We Believe

We believe that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world and the only hope for sinful man!

Man was created by God to live in harmony with his eternal will, but chose to sin and was thereby separated from God.  Because of God's amazing love, He desired to reconcile man unto Himself (2 Peter 3:9).  This was accomplished through Christ's atoning sacrifice on the cross, wherin God both punished man's sin through Jesus death, and cleansed us through His blood (2 Corinthians 5:21).

However, God has always given man free will, and it is our choice to accept Christ's sacrifice or reject it.  Accepting God's grace begins with belief in Christ as the Son of God and Lord (John 3:16).  Also, the believer must repent of his sins, thereby leaving his sinful ways behind and determining to live his life for Jesus (Luke 13:3).  The repentant believer will confess Christ as Lord, openly and without reservation  (Romans 10:10).  The acceptance of Christ's sacrifice is made complete when the believer submits himself in water baptism for the remission of his sins, in order to receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38).  This process is the essence of saving faith (Mark 16:15-16), which is our response to God's wonderous grace and the new birth from death in sin to life in Christ (John 3:3-5).  It is God who saves us through His grace, and there is nothing man can ever do to earn any part of the free gift of salvation (Ephesians 2:8-9).

As saved people, baptized believers are added to the Lord's church (Acts 2:47).  We have all been made a part of a spiritual community, and are instructed to worship our God as His body  (Hebrews 10:25).

The religious world is filled with confusion and varying opinions.  We believe that the only way in which we can be certain that all we do is pleasing to God, is to follow the New Testament as closely as possible.  Therefore, the Sherrod Avenue church of Christ is not part of any denomination, but simply strives to pattern itself after the first christians we read of in the Bible.

To God be all glory and honor!
